We believe in a God who is concerned for the world
For many people God is pictured as stern , distant, aloof kind of figure. Someone who is out to stop them people having fun by imposing unreasonable rules upon them - a harsh disciplinarian
The Bible, however, shows that God is loving and caring. He is a warm and affectionate father. Yes, he does expect people to obey his rules, but those rules, in the words of one of the writers of the Bible, 'are not burdensome.' rather they are for our own good. we believe that god made us and therefore knows what is best for us. We try to follow the maker's instructions.
We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God
Many people believe that Jesus was a good man. Other religions hold Him in high esteem and call Him a prophet. As Christians (followers of Christ), we believe that Jesus was much more than just a good man, or even a prophet. We believe that he was the Son of God. If you want to know what God is really like, you need look no further than Jesus - He is the image of His Father.
We believe that Jesus came to earth to make a difference
Although our world is a very beautiful place, there is much that is wrong with it: suffering, pain, poverty, racism etc. etc. And there is much that is wrong with us. the whole human race is tainted with sin ( you don't need to teach children to be naughty !). God, as a loving father, cannot just watch the world destroy itself.
He sent His Son to rescue us from our sins, and set us free from destructive habits and lifestyles. We believe that one day Jesus is going to return to earth, to finish off what he started. The world will be transformed and God has promised that those who believe in Jesus will one day share in that new world where there will be no more suffering or pain.
If you get to meet us you will realize that we are not perfect people: we still make mistakes; we still do wrong things; we let God and one another down. But one day everything will be different. Not only will the world be changed, but we will be changed. So as Christians we have hope.
We believe that the Bible is the most important book ever written
It can seem strange to people that Christians spend time reading a book that was written so many centuries ago. How can it be relevant today ?
It's a good question. Yes, it was written a long time ago, by people without the scientific and technological knowledge which we have today. But we believe that God was also involved in the process; He inspired it: He caused the writers to put down the thoughts and words which He wanted.
So it is a reliable, trustworthy guide for people today. If you take time to read it, you will find that it provides answers to many of the deepest questions people ask. It comforts and challenges us. It gives people who don't know what to believe, a framework within which to live out there lives.
We believe that the church is a family, not just a building
For many people the word 'church' means a building, usually cold and foreboding, where they are subjected to long boring services !
In the Bible however, the first Christians did not have buildings. They met in each other's homes, and for them, being part of a church meant belonging to a family. It was a place where they could help one another and learn how to live the Christian life.
Here at Sudbury baptist, we too try to be family. Many people today feel lost in a lonely world. We hope that you will find in our church, a place where you feel you can belong.
We believe that there is life after death
We believe that there is real place called 'heaven', a place where there will be no more suffering and pain. We believe that God loves everyone in the world and wants all to share in the joys of heaven with Him.
However, we also believe that not everyone will end up in heaven. Jesus once made the following statement: 'No one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again.' This phrase 'born again' is one that you may be familiar with, though unfortunately it has become rather a cliché. It is actually saying something of crucial importance. No one is automatically a member of God's family. membership comes through choice: God has made us with freewill. If you were a British citizen, but wanted to become an American citizen, you would have to make an application and fulfil certain conditions.
To join God's family there are 3 things to do. A-B-C.
A. Admit that you have done wrong things and ask God to forgive you.
B. Believe that God love you enough to send His Son to bring you forgiveness and new life.
C. Count the cost. Following Jesus is not always easy. it means putting God first in your life. It means trying, with God's help, to turn your back on wrong things. It means being willing to stand up, live differently and be known as a Christian.
Becoming a Christian is a serious step, but it is a step which God is longing for you to take. He wants you to be 'born again' into His family and become a citizen of His Kingdom.
